AI is moving fast, but are we managing the risks? AI governance is becoming critical and frameworks like NIST AI RMF can help organizations stay responsible.

Examining the risks of artificial Intelligence
AI is moving fast, but without strong compliance frameworks, companies risk major ethical failures and public backlash. Al has many risks, including but not limited to security breaches, model drift, and the implementation of biased systems that can lead to discrimination. All of these risks have the potential to create institutional or societal harm.
Al governance is becoming essential for every industry, and companies will need industry professionals who can implement applicable laws and Al governance standards while aligning with organizational objectives.
As Project Manager focused on Al Governance, I'm currently deepening my knowledge of AI compliance by studying the NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF), to support the rapid, responsible implementation of these technologies.
Effective Approaches to Ensuring Compliance
The NIST AI RMF provides a framework to ensure an Al system is valid, meaning there is objective evidence to prove the system actually does what it is intended to do.
For example, a weather tool failing to predict a record-breaking spring heat wave because it was only trained on historical temperatures and didn't account for rapidly shifting climate patterns.
The NIST Al RMF assists organizations with assessing and managing these risks and their impacts, especially through its recommendation of utilizing diverse perspectives throughout the Al lifecycle. Diverse perspectives from AI actors, a part of design, development and deployment alongside feedback from end-users, can help mitigate harmful AI effects by uncovering hidden risks.
How are you ensuring your AI systems remain valid and operate within the boundaries of its intended use?
