Policy, Compliance & Governance
A new startup needed a foundational employee handbook to ensure compliance with employment laws, clearly defined workplace policies, and established expectations for employees. With fewer than ten staff, operating without a formal handbook created risks of legal exposure, inconsistent practices, and unclear guidance for the team.
Problem
Action
I led the development of a employee handbook for the startup, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and clearly defining company expectations. The handbook covered employee responsibilities and rights, including unpaid sick leave, communication standards, disciplinary procedures, and harassment prevention. To support risk management, I used input from the owner and team, ensuring diverse perspectives were considered while creating policies that protected both employees and the company.

I executed this using a hybrid methodology, gathering initial regulatory and organizational requirements during the planning phase and utilizing ClickUp to manage the handbook's delivery across four sprints for continuous feedback. This included researching and proactively integrating upcoming Maryland FAMLI payroll changes to ensure long-term regulatory compliance.
Result
The employee handbook established a strong governance framework for the startup, providing clear policies and procedures to ensure compliance and mitigate organizational risk.
